Growing Futures RI interview with Meghan from Wild & Scenic

In this episode, we’re chatting with Meghan Gallagher from who never realized that working outside could be a career option! Hear about Meghan’s journey into Green Industries as she falls in love with horticulture and fine gardening and how that lead her to a career where she finds fulfillment!

SEASONAL GARDENER POSITION

Key Duties include but are not limited to:

Wild & Scenic Inc is a creative design and fine gardening company. Our mission is to use sustainable horticulture practices to produce beautiful, quality landscapes that function within the greater local ecosystem.

We are currently seeking full-time and part-time, seasonal gardeners. Qualified candidates will be expected to perform garden maintenance tasks such as planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, raking and deadheading of annuals and perennials in a variety of landscape settings.

Qualification include:
• Enthusiasm for horticulture and the natural world
• A positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Someone who is detail-oriented and can take instruction
• Professionalism with clients and coworkers
• Effective communication skills
• The ability to work efficiently, whether individually or as part of a team
• Someone who is reliable and on time
• A valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Transportation to and from work
• Prior experience, or a basic understanding of horticulture practices and plant identification, is preferred

Applicants must also be able to meet the following physical demands:
• Exert force and lift up to 50lbs
• Regularly climb in and out of truck beds 3ft off the ground
• Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel for extended periods of time
• Shovel heavy material (soil, compost, mulch) often
• Regularly reach above and below shoulder height to rake and prune
• Grip and grasp hand tools
• Work in variable weather conditions (light rain, summer heat, cold)

CREW LEADER

Key Duties include but are not limited to:

Wild & Scenic Inc is a creative design and fine gardening company working mostly on large estates. Our mission is to use sustainable horticulture practices to produce beautiful, quality landscapes that function within the greater local ecosystem.

We are currently seeking full-time crew leaders for the 2021 gardening season. Duties include assisting Wild & Scenic’s owner in the management of seasonal gardening staff, clients and their landscapes, as well as the care of Wild & Scenic equipment and vehicles. Qualified candidates will also be expected to perform general garden maintenance tasks such as planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, raking and deadheading of annuals and perennials in a variety of landscape settings.

Crew leader duties include:
• Review daily assignments with supervisor and delegate tasks to crew members as necessary
• Responsible for time management of crew and ensuring that all priority tasks are completed
• Act as primary point of contact for supervisor throughout the day
• Oversee regular care of company trucks, including cleaning, stocking and fueling, as well as tool inventory and maintenance
• Manage watering and maintenance schedule for nursery yard
• Must be available to work extended hours during height of season

Qualifications for Crew leader candidate:
• Enthusiasm for horticulture and the natural world
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Natural leader with effective communication skills and ability to make decisions easily and quickly
• Reliable and on time
• A valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Reliable transportation to and from work
• Proficient in advanced pruning and PHC techniques
• At least 5 years professional gardening experience
• At least 2 years managerial experience

• Regularly climb in and out of truck beds 3ft off the ground
• Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel for extended periods of time
• Shovel heavy material (soil, compost, mulch) often

• Work in variable weather conditions (rain, heat, cold)
